FAQ

Where is the farm located?

The farm is located at 32 Harvest Lane, Old Beach Tasmania 7017.  We are approximately 20 minutes from Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania.  We are the closest cherry-picking farm to the city of Hobart, which is full of sightseeing activities for those wanting to explore on their days off

When does the cherry season start and finish?

The cherry season usually begins mid December and lasts until late January depending on the amount of fruit and crop numbers each year.

What are the required hours of work?

The required hours of work vary each day depending on the amount of fruit which needs to be picked.  Picking will start at 6am and usually finishes around 2-4pm on average.  We can require some days to go longer and can request that you work up until 6.00pm, however this is only on rare occasions.  We will usually stop picking when it is raining but will pick in all other weather conditions.  We can pick all or any days of the week.

What are the current rates of pay?

The rate of pay is based on a piecework agreement, rather than an hourly payment. Due to the fruit changing, a rate cannot be set prior to the season commencing and may change throughout the season. A piecework agreement will distributed prior to your commencement. A lug can hold on average 7-8 kilos of cherries and on average competent pickers can pick anywhere from 20-30 lugs a day in peak season.  Pays are processed weekly.

Is there accommodation available on site?

We have a backpacker’s campsite on the grounds.  It is equipped with gas hot water showers, electricity for charging mobiles and laptops, undercover sheds with cooking facilities, fridges, tables, chairs, couches and grassed areas for camping.  You will need to supply your own sleeping arrangements and bedding.  The majority of campers use tents, camper vans or similar.  We do limit the number of campers on site and hit maximum capacity at around 60 campers.  Camping fee is charged at $10 per night per person and deducted from your weekly earnings. Please note, that there is no laundry on site. The nearest Laundromat is located at Bridgewater, about 5 minutes away. Wifi is not available.
